Student Advisor
Main duties include:
* To work within a designated curriculum area of the College and develop a clear understanding of the student body within that area
* To develop a knowledge of the student body by participating actively in the admissions and enrolment process and gaining an understanding of students who are likely to be at risk of disengaging
* To monitor the attendance activity of a given student cohort, as a potential sign of disengagement
* To manage the onward referral and monitoring process for students who do withdraw from courses
* To offer drop-in support for students or tutors worried about students and to develop processes for taking referrals.
* To receive referrals for support and decide upon the most appropriate course of action, discussing this with others where appropriate.
* To develop and maintain a high level of 1-2-1 advisory skill, as well as knowledge of the College, available support and any legal frameworks for offering advice to young people.
* To make referrals to other in the on-course support team, following appropriate procedures for doing so, and maintaining an appropriate degree of involvement with the case from that point.
* To develop and follow protocols for monitoring and evaluating these referrals.
* To maintain detailed records of cases being dealt with in order to contribute to monitoring and evaluation of the service, using statistical and qualitative data.
* To advise tutors and other staff on appropriate ways to support students within and outside the classroom, including organising and attending case conferences where appropriate and dealing with disciplinary matters.
Experience / Qualifications
Successful candidates will have the following knowledge, experience/specialist skills:
* Educated to at least an NVQ level 3 standard or an equivalent qualification
* An understanding of the College Values
* Understanding of factors that put students at risk and sources of support for these
* Knowledge of quality improvement systems and tools to support these
* Ability to communicate on a one to one basis with empathy and deliver difficult messages when required
* Ability to challenge staff and students at all levels and encourage reflective decision making
* Ability to work in an environment of change, contributing and adapting to new ways of working
Candidates will need the following personal attributes:
* Passionate about educational achievement
* Demonstrates a "Can Do" attitude and a commitment to outstanding service
* Teaching, youth work or a similar qualification
* Knowledge of the Every Child Matters Framework and supporting legislation and guidance
