Mechanical Engineer Fitter
MECHANICAL ENGINEER / FITTER
HAMPSHIRE
£23,000 TO £28,000 Dependent upon experience + bonus etc
I am currently recruiting for a local company that designs and manufactures non-destructive testing systems. These are used to test products during manufacture to check that they are free from defects which could affect their performance. The products tested cover a very wide range, including metal plates and tubes, composite parts for aircraft and motorsport, jet engine fan blades, small electronic components and railway wheels and axles.
This company is unusual in that you get the opportunity to see a machine through from its conception to a fully operating unit in a production situation - you are not simply involved in a repetitive task without knowing the function of the part you are making.
THE JOB
You will be responsible to the Chief Mechanical/Design Engineer. The job is mainly concerned with the assembly and setting up of our mechanical scanning machines. These can be both large scale structures and also delicate electro-mechanisms. Typically they will comprise the following parts:
A welded / bolted structural assembly
Linear bearings / guide ways
Rotational bearings of different types
Drive mechanisms with rack and pinion, ball screw and belt drives
Drive shafts, linkages, gearboxes
DC servo and stepper motors, occasionally AC motors
Rotary and/or linear encoders
Buffers, limit switches, collision protection mechanisms
Water tanks, water circulation and treatment units
Preparation of surfaces and painting.
You will use the usual range of power tools in this work and there will be occasional need for small scale pedestal drill, lathe and milling work, although most of our machining is done by specialist sub-contractors.
You will usually work with GA, sub-assembly and detail part drawings, but detailed assembly instructions are not normally available because our machines are often unique. You will therefore need to work on your own initiative, always with the knowledge that a mistake could be quite expensive.
There will be occasional work in awkward positions and at heights of a few metres, so you need to be reasonably fit. You need to be aware of the safety implications of what you are doing and take the necessary precautions.
Many systems require on-site installation. Assistance with this will be one of the tasks. Some of this will require travel in UK and occasionally overseas, with nights away from home where necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship plus several years relevant practical experience. Extended relevant experience without a recognised apprenticeship would not be a reason for disqualification.
Relevent practical experience is more important than formal qualification. You must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues in English. Experience in using CAD systems (preferably Autocad) at a basic level would be an advantage.
